Greater Noida.
The inquiry committee formed by Sharda University could not submit its report to the police on Thursday because the investigation into the death of BDS student Jyoti Sharma in the hostel is not yet complete. The university administration has now said the report will be handed over on Friday. On Thursday, committee members visited Dasna’s Luksar Jail to record the statements of the two professors who are under detention.
The committee also tried to record statements from the victim’s family virtually, but the relatives refused to participate. Jyoti’s cousin, Devendra, said the Amicus Curiae appointed by the Supreme Court has contacted them through messages; they will travel to Greater Noida only if called by the police or by the court-appointed Amicus Curiae.
Keeping the upcoming semester examinations in mind, the police removed the seal from the building late Wednesday. Dr. Ajit Singh, Public Relations Director of Sharda University, confirmed that the building has been unsealed and semester exams will begin on Monday. He added that the committee has finalised its report and will hand it to the police on Friday.
Jyoti Sharma’s hostel room, however, remains sealed. Police will seek court permission before sending her mobile phone, laptop and other items for forensic examination. Nalaa Park SHO Sarvesh Chandra said the phone is locked and the family does not know the passcode.
Background
Last Friday around 9 p.m., Jyoti Sharma hanged herself with a dupatta from the ceiling fan in her 12th-floor room (1209) in the girls’ hostel. A suicide note was recovered in which she accused two professors of harassment. She was reportedly distressed because the professors refused to sign her assignment, which was required before final examinations.
The family alleges the two professors had been harassing her mentally for a week, accusing her of forging signatures on the assignment. Her father had come to the university and apologised, yet the professors continued to taunt her in class. They also threatened to fail her.
