VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital stands among India’s largest and busiest government medical complexes, merging academic rigour with frontline public care. Situated on a 170-acre campus in south-central New Delhi, it was created in 1986 by upgrading the 1942-founded Safdarjung Hospital and integrating it with Vardhman Mahavir Medical College. Together they form an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with a sanctioned bed strength of 1 531; actual occupancy frequently exceeds 2 000 as patients share floors and corridors. Daily footfall routinely tops 10 000 out-patients plus 1 000 emergency cases, making it the city’s de facto referral hub for trauma, infectious disease, and tertiary-level surgery.

Academically, VMMC admits 170 MBBS students every year through NEET-UG and ranks among the most sought-after medical colleges in Delhi. Post-graduate seats stretch across 32 broad and super-specialty disciplines—radiology, anaesthesia, orthopaedics, cardiology, neurology, haematology—and are filled via NEET-PG and NEET-SS. A 42-month nursing school, biostatistics certificate courses and continuing medical education programs further reinforce its teaching mandate. Residents log clinical hours in the parent hospital and at two urban primary-health centres the college operates exclusively for training and outreach.

The clinical infrastructure is expansive: 38 fully-equipped operation theatres that perform over 100 major surgeries daily; a 24-hour Level-I trauma centre that was Delhi’s first; state-of-the-art blood bank, dialysis bay and bone-marrow transplant unit; invasive cardiology labs capable of 400 interventions a month; modern radiology core housing 3 T MRI, 128-slice CT, PET-CT, and dual-source digital subtraction angiography; and Delhi’s largest in-hospital mortuary serving the police medico-legal network. Specialised blocks have been added in phases: the 2014 Mother & Child Centre (500 beds), the 2019 Super-Specialty Block (470 beds) with modular OTs, and a 50-bed burns ward slated for expansion following fire-safety certification.

Research thrives under statutory ethics approval and intramural grants. Faculty members publish 600-plus indexed papers annually, with particular strength in infectious disease modelling, trauma outcomes, and oncology epidemiology. The hospital is a World Health Organization collaborating centre for reproductive health training, runs ICMR-sponsored trials for HIV and Covid therapeutics, and hosts Delhi’s sentinel surveillance site for influenza-like illness.

Digitally, VMMC introduced one of India’s first hospital-wide Hospital Information Systems in 2015; patients now track queues via kiosks and the “Safdarjung Seva” mobile app. Dedicated 4G-enabled ambulances transmit real-time vitals to casualty doctors. The hospital also acts as a PPP telecom back-bone hub for tele-consultation across four neighbouring states and maintains a high-speed secure fibre link with AIIMS.

Affordability remains core: treatment is highly subsidised, medicines and diagnostics are procured through a tendered central store, and a 100-bedded free ward provides end-to-end cancer care. Staff and students run daily charitable clinics in the surrounding slums, reinforcing VMMC & Safdarjung’s identity as a cradle of both medical excellence and social equity.
