St Joseph’s School is a private Catholic K-12 institution located in the heart of historic downtown Graham, North Carolina. Founded in 1926 (initially as St Joseph’s Academy for Girls), the school has grown from a single convent classroom into a modern 17-acre campus that educates just over 700 students each year. Accredited by Cognia and proudly grounded in the Diocese of Charlotte, the school retains its traditional Catholic values while delivering a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum.
Academically, St Joseph’s offers three diploma tracks: standard, honors, and the St Joseph’s Premier Scholars (SJPS) diploma. The latter requires Dual-Enrollment credit through nearby Elon University and a 100-hour community impact capstone. Signature programs include the 9-12 Engineering Pathway (Project Lead the Way), a robust fine-arts suite that houses the only Steinway-graded instrumental studio on a K-12 campus in the state, and the IMPACT Leadership Institute—an advisory program that blends servant-leadership theory with real service. The average class size is 14; last year 96 % of seniors qualified for merit-aid offers totaling $4.8 million.
Campus life revolves around the St Joseph’s Chapel of St Francis, a 350-seat limestone landmark completed in 2019 that anchors daily prayer and also doubles as the performing-arts venue. The Montagne Athletic Center and Walker STEM Pavilion opened in 2021 and house an eight-lane pool, esports lab, robotics arena, and a biotech teaching lab certified by the CDC. Middle-grade students use a separate terraced “LINK” quad to foster independence in grades 6-8 while remaining under one umbrella. Outdoor learning continues in the Living Stations Garden, an acre of native Piedmont plantings used for biology ecology units and chapel meditations.
Athletics are overseen by the Knights’ athletic department, fielding 42 interscholastic teams across 10 sports. Notably, the girls’ soccer squad captured three consecutive NCHSAA 2A titles from 2020-22, and the boys’ swim team again holds the divisional championship. Intramural options include pickleball, ultimate frisbee, and equestrian club hosted at the school’s 40-acre off-campus riding ring.
A hallmark of the school is its Franciscan charism of service. With a full-time director of outreach, students contribute 25,000 local service hours and raise roughly $70,000 for global missions annually. Each October, the entire upper school participates in the “Souper Bowl” soup-making marathon that supplies 12,000 quarts to regional shelters.
St Joseph’s welcomes students of all faiths; roughly 18 % of families identify as non-Catholic or other denominations. The school admits on a rolling basis with need-based and merit tuition assisting more than 40 % of enrolled families. Twenty-six yellow-bus routes blanket five counties, and optional boarding space is available in St Clare Hall for 44 five-day boarders from neighboring states.
