Modern School, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi, is among India’s most distinguished senior-secondary co-educational institutions. Established on 20 October 1920 by Lala Raghubir Singh, it was born out of the conviction that an English-medium education rooted in Indian culture could produce leaders for a newly awakening nation. Set on a lush 27-acre campus in the heart of the capital, the red sandstone Indo-Saracenic buildings house classes from VI to XII, while an adjoining preparatory wing, Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School at Humayun Road, nurtures pupils from nursery to V. The very bricks seem to breathe history—legends like Indira Gandhi, Karan Singh, Arun Jaitley and Kapil Sibal once walked these corridors, and the school crest, emblazoned with the motto “Nyaymatma Balheenyata” (Self-realisation cannot be achieved by the weak), continues to remind today’s 2,700 students that privilege must be matched by responsibility.

Academically, Modern School is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education and offers Science, Commerce and Humanities streams at the +2 level. Most pupils take the All-India Secondary and Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations, and board averages remain comfortably above 90 % year on year. Yet rote learning is not encouraged; instead, learning is inquiry-driven, supported by state-of-the-art laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology and computer science. The Atal Tinkering Lab fosters robotics and AI projects, while the Centre for Heritage Management invites students to document Delhi’s forgotten monuments under UNESCO guidance. In 2015, the school was adjudged the best nationwide in the Education Today rankings, and more recently its teams have won gold at the International Astronomy Olympiad and the Harvard Model United Nations.

Beyond the classroom, Modern School is simply brimming with opportunity. Thirty-five official clubs and societies run Wednesday afternoon activities—from film-making in Mira Hall, the acoustically perfect 400-seat auditorium, to tweaking solar cars in the Design Tech studio. Sport is serious: the campus contains a 25-metre swimming pool, two gymnasiums, flood-lit tennis and basketball courts, squash, shooting range, and a five-storey climbing wall. The football turf hosted the World School Games in 2019, and the school’s annual Modlympics draws over a thousand athletes from partner institutions in Britain and Singapore. Cultural life revolves around the Founders’ Week every October, when concerts, art exhibitions, ‘Mosaic’ food stalls and ‘Saturnalia’, an inter-school street- theatre carnival, transform the campus into a joyous micro-city.

Service is equally woven into school fabric. The Modern School Interact Club, founded 1966, collaborates with 25 NGOs, runs evening literacy centres in nearby slums and has built rainwater-harvesting structures across 200 homes. All students complete mandatory Socially Productive Work; many seniors extend this into gap-year volunteering around India. Residential comfort is another hallmark—the 110-bed Bhai Dhani Ram Hostel offers air-conditioned cubicles, round-the-clock pastoral care and supervision by resident faculty, drawing boarders from 17 states and five neighbouring countries. Fully Wi-Fi enabled, the school employs AI-driven smart class content, a biometric attendance system and solar panels that meet 40 % of the campus energy demand.
