Medanta – The Medicity, spread across forty-three acres on the Gurugram–Delhi expressway, has evolved since 2009 into one of India’s most comprehensive quaternary-care hospitals. The 1,600-bed complex houses over 800 physicians across 29 super-specialities who, together with 4,000 nurses, technologists and support staff, treat more than 2.5 million Indian and international patients every year. Its very architecture encourages interdisciplinary collaboration: seven specialist institutes radiate from a central atrium that contains patient registration, lounges and high-street retail, shortening walk-distance for families while keeping critical-care zones within a two-minute emergency reach even from the perimeter towers.

Each institute functions as a mini-hospital with diagnostic suites. The Heart Institute is led by Dr. Naresh Trehan, and performs more than 15,000 open-heart operations annually—among the world’s highest volumes—with 98.5 % first-time success for complex valve repairs, assisted by two 256-slice CT scanners and a 3-T transplant-ready MRI. Adjacent is the Division of Robotic & Minimal-Access Surgery, equipped with the fourth-generation da Vinci Xi; 60 % of all prostatectomies and 70 % of colorectal resections are now completely robotic, reducing average length of stay to 2.1 days.

The Cancer Institute consolidates medical, surgical and radiation oncology in one tower, anchored by EDGE radiosurgery, a TomoTherapy unit and a CAR-T cell laboratory under GMP-grade clean rooms. Medanta was the first Indian facility to conduct haploidentical bone-marrow transplant using post-transplant cyclophosphamide, and its paediatric programme records a five-year survival of 87 % for ALL. Transplant hepatology, too, is globally ranked; the team has performed over 4,800 liver transplants, 1,500 of them in children under fifteen, with a one-year graft survival exceeding 93 %.

Medanta’s Institute of Neurosciences combines 3-tesla intraoperative MRI, intra-op fluorescence, and awake-craniotomy protocols with an integrated epilepsy monitoring unit that implants 256-channel SEEG electrodes. For cardiac-electrophysiology patients needing neurological ‘hot-spot’ mapping, a crossover lab shared by cardiology and neurology can switch from interventional cath to EEG within three minutes.

The facility is accredited by JCI and NABH, runs India’s first in-house HEPA-filtered drone delivery network between its Gurugram campus and research laboratories in Delhi, and operates four pharmacies on robotic storage systems that retain 7,500 SKUs at 2-8 °C in real time. Additions now under construction include a 200-bed paediatric oncology wing and a cyclotron-protected PET-MR centre, positioning Medanta to remain at the cutting edge of Indian healthcare while sustaining its founding goal: “to bring the best of medicine within one city-block.”
