Mahanandan Super-Speciality Hospital, located on 4½ Kms from Mall Road in Karnal, Haryana, has grown in just six years from an idea sketched on a napkin into a 220-bed tertiary-care landmark that North Haryana looks up to. Named after the late Dr A. K. Mahananda, the founder’s father whose private clinic served Karnal for four decades, the 11-storey teal-green tower stands opposite the NDRI campus and defines the skyline when travellers enter the city from NH-44. The façade is built in glass and recycled fly-ash brick, LEED-silver-certified; a 1 000-panel solar farm on the roof powers close to 40 % of daily energy needs.
Within, the hospital is organized around five Centres of Excellence: Cardiac Sciences, Neurosciences, Gastro-Liver & HPB Surgery, Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and Mother & Child Care. Each centre works out of dual-ring corridors to minimise patient transfers; intra-hospital pneumatic tubes and a vacuum–driven waste system operate silently above the ceiling. A fleet of six dedicated ICU ambulances with ECMO capability is stationed 24 × 7, picking up referrals within 150 km radius.
True super-specialty depth is visible in its team of 51 full-time consultants (DM / MCh / FRCS) and 260 nurses; half of the senior staff hold dual qualifications in India and NABH, UK or US boards. The facility was accredited by NABH 2nd edition in 2022 and NABL for its nine modular laboratories. The Heart Institute houses Haryana’s first 512-slice Revolution CT and a hybrid cath-lab capable of TAVI, complex CTO and structural heart work; more than 2 400 angioplasties and 1 100 surgeries (CABG, valve repair/replacement and paediatric corrections) have been performed with a 98 % in-hospital success rate.
Neurosciences offer 3T intraoperative MRI, robotic stereotaxy and Stroke Code that alerts CT table to 9:12 minutes – faster than many city metros. The Orthopaedics unit runs an Arthroscopy Simulation Lab where residents practise on synthetic knees before entering operating theatres; it also hosts the first EPIDURAL-MAC knee-replacement programme in Haryana, discharging most joint-replacement patients on the 3rd morning. Gastro-Liver & HPB surgeons perform minimally invasive Whipples, HPB oncological resections and living-donor liver transplantation with complete molecular pathology support on site.
The Mother-and-Child block has 20 LDR suites, two Level-III NICUs with 32 intensive cots, in-house foetal MRI, and a genetic counselling team. Over 4 050 deliveries per annum and an average gestation-at-birth of 37.6 weeks testify to foetomaternal care quality.
Outreach programmes run simultaneously: the hospital’s mobile cardiac vans screen 40 000 blue-collar workers each year; the “Sugar-Free Rural Karnal” project trains ASHA workers to use glucometers and follow up diabetics at home. An in-house cafeteria prepares diet cards synced with patient EMRs, a 650-seat prayer hall respects multi-faith sensibilities and a 96-key guest-house, “Mahanandan Homes”, is a rare facility for caregivers travelling long distances for transplant or NICU care.
Even during the two COVID-19 waves the hospital expanded to 180 ICU beds, inducted a liquid-oxygen tank and a 2 000 LPM PSA plant within 17 days, and lost only three of 2 977 COVID admissions—a survival record. Its patient-first philosophy is summed up by a single sentence printed on every OPD card: “Trust may begin with a promise; it must end in measurable health.”
