Girton High School is an independent, Anglican day school for girls from Prep to Year 12 located on a leafy 19-hectare campus in Maribyrnong, six kilometres north-west of Melbourne’s city centre. Founded in 1886, the school is Victoria’s first Anglican girls’ school and operates a non-selective enrolment policy drawing families from over 80 postcodes across Melbourne’s western and inner-northern suburbs.

Academic program
From the Early Learning Centre (three- and four-year-old kindergarten) to VCE, the school follows the Australian Curriculum supplemented by specialist programs in STEM, music, performing arts and outdoor education. Co-curricular offerings include the da Vinci Decathlon, Tournament of Minds, a fully tilt-telescope Astronomy Club and access to University of Melbourne extension studies. Median ATAR for the 2023 cohort was 87.90, with 20% of students scoring 95+ and four perfect 99.95 results since 2019.

Pastoral care & wellbeing
Girton employs a vertical House system—Mitchell, Russell and Inglis—run by Heads of House and House tutors who oversee daily roll-calls, service projects and weekly wellbeing sessions based on the PERMA-H framework. A dedicated Wellbeing Centre opened in 2020 and houses two psychologists, a mental-health nurse and the Positive Education Team. The GIRLS Program (Gratitude, Initiative, Resilience, Leadership, Service) spans Years 5–12 and includes wilderness expeditions to the Murray River and peer-mentor training.

Facilities
Recent capital works have added a $12 million Science, Technology & Art Precinct, the David Blackwood Music School and the Joan Hammond Performing Arts Centre, which seats 600 people and houses a Steinway concert grand piano. All classrooms are fitted with Promethean interactive panels and enterprise-grade Wi-Fi; Year 12 have a private study mezzanine overlooking the heritage-listed Toorak elms.

Sports & co-curricular sport
A 25-metre heated pool, six synthetic tennis/netball courts, and the Fernhill Sport & Aquatic Complex shared with Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre provide training venues for teams that compete in the Girls’ Sport Victoria (GSV) premiership. Students can choose rowing on the Maribyrnong River, fencing, water polo or karate in addition to traditional athletics and hockey.

Global & service learning
Girton hosts annual exchanges with Cheltenham Ladies’ College (UK), St Cyprian’s School (South Africa) and Fukuoka Jo Gakuin (Japan). Service projects range from weekly reading mentors at nearby Dinjerra Primary to the Year 10 “Cambodia Build” in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. More than 18,000 volunteer hours are logged annually.

Community spirit
Mother-daughter alumnae dinners, house-organised trivia nights and the biennial “Garden Concert” foster inter-generational connections. The school receives strong philanthropic support; the 2023 Giving Day raised $1.8 million towards indigenous scholarships and a new scholarships are awarded at entry through Year 11.
