Astha Hospital, located in the heart of Bhubaneswar’s thriving Saheed Nagar district, is a 150-bed, multi-specialty tertiary care institution that has become synonymous with dependable, ethical, and affordable healthcare for eastern India. Established in 2004 by Dr. Mihir Ranjan Mohanty and Dr. Sangeeta Mohanty, the hospital was born out of a vision to blend evidence-based Western medicine with Indian values of compassion and accessibility. Over two decades it has grown from a modest 40-bed nursing home into a seven-storey, NABH-accredited campus that treats more than 350 in-patients and 1,200 out-patients daily.

Astha’s clinical core is built around centers of excellence in cardiac sciences, neurosciences, orthopedics, oncosurgery, minimal-access surgery, and high-risk obstetrics. The 24-bed Level III NICU, the city’s first private ECMO program, and an advanced stroke unit that can perform mechanical thrombectomy around-the-clock are particular points of pride. Diagnostic support comes from a 128-slice CT, 1.5T MRI, 4D ultrasonography, and a fully automated molecular pathology lab that can run 600 tests a night. Three modular OTs with laminar flow, intra-op CT, and robotic-arm assistance allow complex tumor resections to be done with sub-millimetric precision while maintaining minimal blood loss.

Human resources mirror the clinical ambition: over 125 full-time consultants, many with training from AIIMS, CMC Vellore, or the Royal Colleges, are supported by 350 nurses, 50 respiratory therapists, and 40 emergency technicians. Continual education occurs in the hospital’s own DNB programs in cardiology, anesthesia, and neonatology, and in weekly tumor boards that are streamed to partner hospitals in tier-2 towns.

Patient experience is curated down to the smallest detail. The landscaped central courtyard, Malayalam-and Telugu-speaking help-desks, and subsidised canteen meals for attendants all reflect the founders’ belief that healing is holistic. The Astha Arogya Suraksha scheme has treated 12,000 below-poverty-line patients free of cost or at deeply discounted rates, funded by a 5% cross-subsidy from private ward tariffs. During Cyclone Phailin and the COVID-19 surge of 2021 the hospital ran 24-hour triage camps, converted an entire floor into a 50-bed ICU in 72 hours, and partnered with the Red Cross to ferry medical supplies across Odisha. Recognitions include the FICCI Healthcare Excellence Award for Patient Safety (2019) and the QCI-DLP India Best Multi-Specialty Hospital (East) for 2022-23. At Astha Hospital, advanced medicine and humane care do not sit apart—they converge in every clean corridor, every confident smile, and every quiet corridor conversation that whispers, “You are safe here.”
