JR Hospital is a 380-bed tertiary-care medical center founded in 1994 by the late philanthropist-entrepreneur Dr. Jayanth Raghavan. Located on 6.2 landscaped acres on the eastern ring-road of Pune, Maharashtra, the institution has grown from a 50-bed specialty clinic into the city’s largest not-for-profit, multispecialty hospital. Accredited by NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals), JR Hospital draws more than 220,000 out-patients and performs over 11,000 surgical procedures yearly.

Architecture & Environment
Glass-and-brick blocks rise around a central healing garden where medicinal plants grow and filtered sunlight reaches the chemotherapy day-care lounge. Forty-two digitally controlled negative-pressure isolation rooms serve infectious-disease care; four modular laminar-flow theatres outfitted with robotic C-arms support complex spine and neuro-interventional procedures. A solar-roof array supplies 2.3 MW of renewable power and feeds the facility’s fleet of electric ambulances.

Clinical Departments
– Cardiac sciences: 24-hour cath lab, 64-slice cardiac CT, ECMO program.
– Oncology: linear-accelerator-based radiotherapy, 3 Tesla intraoperative MRI suite, bone-marrow transplant unit.
– Neurosciences: comprehensive stroke center with tele-stroke outreach to 42 rural centers across Maharashtra.
– Women & Child Care: Level-III NICU, fetal-medicine unit, minimally invasive adolescent gynecology.
– Orthopedics & Sports Medicine: arthroscopy training cadaver lab recognized by ISAKOS.

Research & Academia
Affiliated with BJ Medical College and the newly launched Raghavan Institute of Translational Medicine, the hospital runs Phase-II/III trials with ICMR and the Drugs Controller General of India. Annual research grant outlay exceeds ₹40 crore; recent publications have advanced gender-affirming surgery techniques and AI-enabled diabetic-retinopathy screening.

Community Initiatives
Every weekday, mobile screening vans branded “JR Dhadkan” visit slums and gram panchayats offering free ECG, spirometry, and Pap-smear camps. A sliding-scale fee policy ensures that 33 % of beds remain reserved for Below-Poverty-Line patients; no one has ever been turned away for lack of funds. During the COVID-19 second wave, the hospital operated the largest civilian oxygen plant in western India, producing 1,700 L/min and distributing 2.8 million cubic feet gratis to nearby public hospitals.

Digital Ecosystem
Patients consult doctors through the JR Saksham app, where e-prescriptions plug directly into a home-delivery pharmacy integrated with e-pharmacy partners. Smart-room tablets stream vernacular health shows, enable real-time interpreter video calls, and allow relatives to virtually “visit” ICU beds after biometric authentication. Enterprise-wide interoperability meets MinIO-based HIPAA-compatible archiving for 5-year minimum medical records.

Future Roadmap
A 160-bed tower devoted exclusively to geriatric oncology is slated for commissioning in 2027, while a robotic pharmacy using UDDS (unit-dose dispensing) is already in pilot. Sustainability targets include achieving carbon neutrality by 2032 through increased rooftop greenery, anerobic bio-digestion of food waste, and conversion of the emergency diesel generators to green hydrogen cells.

From lifesaving oncology microsurgeries to door-step hypertension screenings, JR Hospital fuses cutting-edge technology with mission-driven philanthropy, aiming to redefine healthcare equity in urban and rural India alike.
