Ira Global School is a day-cum-boarding institution located in Powai, Mumbai, on a hillside campus overlooking Vihar Lake. First established in 1997 as “Ira Public School,” it rebranded in 2018 to reflect a more outward-facing curriculum and now offers co-educational classes from Nursery through Grade 12 for roughly 1,200 day scholars and 320 boarders.
Although rooted in the Indian national system (it is currently a Provisional Cambridge International Centre that also presents ICSE/ISC examinations until Grade 10), Grades 11–12 follow only the Cambridge A-Level route, giving students the option of 22 subjects including Marine Science and Global Perspectives. All pupils take the Cambridge IGCSE Global Citizenship course in Grade 8 and complete the school-designed “INSPIRE Portfolio,” in which they log 200 hours of community impact, interdisciplinary projects and personal skill challenges before Grade 10; completion is now a transcript requirement for Ira’s own high-school diploma.
Beyond academics the schedule is built around a 50-minute “Integrated Lab” block each afternoon: students rotate through art studios, a woodworking lab, a weather station and the FabLab, which houses two Prusa 3-D printers, a laser cutter, an embroidery digitising station and VR headsets shared with the MIT App Inventor club. Competitive robotics is taken seriously—eight teams entered the 2023 FIRST Tech Challenge South Asia semifinals—and the school funds tier-3 drone pilot certification for girls in Grades 9–11 as part of its IraDrone outreach.
From Grade 6 upwards every learner joins one of four “vertical houses” (Tahira, Miraya, Arin, Reyansh) that function like small learning communities; house tutors track wellbeing, run SAT boot camps and mentor service-learning teams that partner with Powai-based NGOs. Ethical leadership is threaded through the house system and culminates in Grade 11’s week-long Himalayan Exchange with the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, involving micro-hydro work and astronomy workshops under dark skies.
Pastoral care is led by two full-time counsellors, an adolescent psychiatrist on retainer and a 24×7 medical bay staffed by a Parsi General Hospital nurse. Boarders live in air-conditioned, four-bed rooms arranged by cohort rather than age to build mentoring ties, while the newly built Ananya Centre provides a quiet study suite until 23:00. Day students can opt for the late-evening “Second Shift” bus service that departs at 19:45 after supervised prep.
Admission is selective: Nursery draws by draw, but from Grade 1 both an online diagnostic of English, mathematics and logical reasoning, plus a collaborative task observed by faculty, count in a 100-point index. Twenty-seven full-fee and fifty-eight need-based scholarships are granted annually; notably, the Navajo Scholarship fully funds the IB-equivalent A-Level fees of a refugee or first-generation learner each year. Recent graduating cohorts (2 batches of 85 students) have placed into Imperial College London, Ashoka, UBC, NUS and Minerva at KGI, with merit places aided by the school’s in-house university-guidance team whose data wall maps outcomes against personalised learner profiles since Grade 9.
Ira Global School is perhaps best understood not through facilities alone but through its Graduate Profile promise: “Fierce curiosity, ethical courage, planetary stewardship.”
