Welcome Hospital is a privately-owned tertiary-care medical center located on a 16-acre campus in the coastal city of Newhaven, recognized for its patient-first philosophy and academic-level care. Since opening its doors in 1998 with 180 beds, the hospital has undergone three major expansions and now operates 520 inpatient beds, a 42-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit, and one of the region’s busiest Level I trauma centers, receiving nearly 90,000 emergency visits annually.
The main facility is a ten-story glass-and-steel structure connected by climate-controlled sky bridges to a four-story oncology pavilion and a two-story outpatient diagnostics center completed in 2022. All clinical floors use evidence-based design elements—natural light, sound-absorbing materials, and patient-controlled lighting—to reduce stress and accelerate healing. Families have access to 24-hour welcome lounges on every inpatient floor, equipped with sleep recliners, charging stations, and private consultation rooms.
Clinical excellence is anchored by ten Centers of Excellence: cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, oncology and hematology, maternal-fetal medicine, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, orthopedics and sports medicine, neurology including a certified stroke center, gastroenterology and hepatology, nephrology and kidney transplantation, psychiatry and behavioral health, and an HIV-AIDS care program designated by the Ministry of Health as a National Referral Hub. The da Vinci Xi surgical robot performs over 1,600 procedures a year; stereotactic radiosurgery is available in the Gamma Knife suite; and the hybrid cardiac catheterization lab enables same-day diagnosis and intervention.
Welcome Hospital’s electronic medical record is fully integrated across inpatient, outpatient, and home-care services, allowing seamless visits through the WelcomeCare mobile app that offers virtual consultations, prescription management, and real-time parking updates. More than 1,100 credentialed physicians and 3,000 nurses and allied staff support the technology; 62% of physicians are faculty of Newhaven Medical College located three blocks north, fostering continuous innovation. The hospital teaches over 270 residents and fellows each year and conducts 240 active clinical trials in partnership with international institutions.
Community outreach includes a weekly “Healthy Steps” walk led by hospital staff through downtown Newhaven, free mobile mammography units serving rural counties, and a school-based asthma program that has reduced emergency visits among participating children by 34%. Welcome Hospital is currently powered by 38% renewable energy, aims for net-zero emissions by 2035, and holds LEED Gold certification for its newest buildings.
