Masai School is an outcome-focused, pay-after-placement coding institute founded in 2019 by Prateek Shukla, Nrupul Dev, and Yogesh Bhat. Headquartered in Bengaluru, India, it operates fully online and currently trains learners from more than 600 towns across the country. The venture was conceived to close India’s engineering-skills gap by doing away with the traditional upfront-tuition model and aligning success metrics with that of students: if you do not get a job paying a minimum CTC of ₹5 lakhs a year (the current threshold), you do not pay any fee. This “Income Share Agreement”, capped at 15–17 % of salary for a maximum of 36 monthly instalments or ₹3 lacs, whichever is reached first, has stayed at the heart of every program revision and has quietly challenged the return-on-investment narrative of four-year degrees.
Learning is full-time and immersive. The flagship 35-week “Full Stack Web Development” curriculum delivers 1,200 hours of instruction, 500 of which are pure coding, through three 11- to 12-week sprints. Each sprint begins with tool setup, moves into 6–7 weeks of live, pair-programming heavy classes (JavaScript, Node.js, MongoDB, React, Redux), and closes with a one-week build sprint where students ship a deployable product. Daily schedule runs 9 am–9 pm IST; mornings are for DSA / system-design drills on Replit, afternoons for instructor-led whiteboarding, evenings for mandatory stand-ups and self-review. Fridays are reserved for simulated “Demo Days”; Saturdays for industry interaction; Sundays only for assignments – voluntarily, but 9x average attendance is common.
The faculty pool is small and accomplished: 90 % are working engineers pulled from Paytm, ThoughtWorks, Google Developer Expert network, or alumni who placed above ₹15 lacs CTC. Class ratio is strictly 1:10. Students pass through three gates: a 3-hour adaptive entrance (91 % rejection rate), a week-12 competency gate (Algorithms + personal project code review), and week-25 placement readiness gate (live panel interview pass mark = 70 %). Pedagogically the school runs “Constructionism x Deliberate Practice”: every concept is a build, every block is reviewed through a public GitHub PR culture that rewards clean commit messages and modular code.
Placement data released for 2023 show 1,027 active offers, ₹7.2 lacs median salary, and ₹22.1 lacs highest. Current hiring partners include Dream11, Urban Company, ShareChat, Swiggy, Meesho and early-stage funded startups funnelled via the in-house Masai Alumni Network (4,300 members). Career services run six weeks pre-graduation: mock-technical interviews (CTO-led), salary negotiation labs, and a digital “learning portfolio” of 18 Capstone projects with Lighthouse performance scores. Drop-out remains high at 12 % but placement remains at 86 % for graduates, partly because every learner signs a personalised “student success contract” that promises one-on-one counselling if weekly assignment score dips below 70 %. Scholarships (₹20 k per month living stipend) go to female and Tier-3 college candidates under the Women-in-Tech and IGNITE blocks respectively.
Masai School is privately held, seeded by 100x.VC and IndiaQuotient at an undisclosed valuation. It is not affiliated with UGC or AICTE.
