The Indian School of Advanced Ballistics and Engineering – Greater Noida, popularly known as ISAB Greater Noida, is a pioneering, industry-aligned technical campus established in 2008 by the ISAB Education Society under the aegis of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and in technical partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Certified AICTE and empowered by the UGC, the institute sits on a 28-acre smart-green campus strategically located in Knowledge Park-V, Greater Noida, and leverages proximity to Aeronautical, Electronics & Defence corridors that define the Delhi-NCR aerospace ecosystem.
Academic Portfolio & Pedagogy
ISAB offers four flagship programs:
• B.Tech. in Advanced Defence Engineering (Ballistics & Terminal Effects) – 180 seats
• B.Tech. in Avionics & Missile Guidance Systems – 120 seats
• M.Tech. in Strategic Systems Technology – 30 seats
• Ph.D. programmes in Ballistics, Materials, Guided-Weapon Systems and Strategic Policy Studies.
All courses follow a 60 % lab-studio and 40 % classroom blend based on DRDO-HAL project cycles. Students enrol simultaneously in a four-semester “JIGYASA” minor that tracks a live weapon-platform project from design-inception to on-range test. Final-year undergraduates must clear two stringent boards: HAL Production Readiness Review and DRDO Systems Safety Audit.
Infrastructure Highlights
• Ballistics Impact Tunnel – India’s only indoor dual-specter, 200-m laser-range facility, capable of 1.2 Mach projectile testing and protected by composite blast-mitigation shells.
• Avionics Integration Hangar – 5000 sq m open-bay lab complete with HIL (Hardware-in-Loop) rigs for seeker guidance, digital twins and augmented-reality troubleshooting stations.
• Materials & Survivability Complex – Houses electro-magnetic pulse chambers, high-velocity particle infusion lab, and an additive-manufacturing foundry that prints Inconel 718 missile casings overnight.
• 1.5 km closed military-spec test-track with embedded IoT sensors and remote command post to validate autonomous propulsion modules.
R&D & Corporate Partners
ISAB runs six Centres of Excellence co-funded by DRDO (DPG), ISRO (VSSC) and private majors such as MBDA. Notable outcomes include GODHAN, an aluminium/tantalum reactive armour panel (adopted for Arjun Mk-2), and the SAVITRI microwave degradable composite panel now employed on HAL LCH. In 2023 alone, ISAB faculty filed 42 patents and generated ₹18 crore in IP licensing. Under the HAL “SAKSHAM” fellowship, 37 UG teams are currently modifying seeker heads for future Astra Mk-3 missiles.
Placements & Global Mobility
ISAB Greater Noida achieves 97 % final placement every May, with median domestic package at ₹24 LPA. Core recruiters include DRDL, GTRE, ADA, BrahMos Aerospace, Tata Advanced Systems and MBDA France. Since 2021, 14 % of graduates annually secure international rotations through joint projects with MBDA-Matrix (UK), Rafael (Israel) and Naval Group (France).
Life on Campus
A 1:9 faculty-student ratio ensures mentoring. Hostels are secure, gender-inclusive, air-conditioned and linked through the ISAB-Secure biometric mesh. Every Thursday evening, “Shaastra Sabha” hosts eminent scientists such as Dr Tessy Thomas (“Agni Woman”) or Dr G Satheesh Reddy. The campus also fields Crack-Ball, the reigning national champion in the DRDO Aero-Design Challenge and operates the student-led L-39 Albatross flying laboratory.
Accreditations & Rankings
• NBA Tier-I accreditation for all B.Tech. programs (2023).
• NAAC A+ grade with 3.65 CGPA.
• Ranked 25th in NIRF Engineering (2024), 1st among defence-oriented institutes.
Scholarships & Outreach
ISAB awards 120 needs-blind scholarships annually, covering full tuition plus DRDO intern stipends. Through “Project ARPAN”, 58 tribal-state schools receive one-day mobile ballistics-labs built by ISAB students.
In summary, ISAB Greater Noida stands at the confluence of cutting-edge defence research, rigorous academics, and deep industry linkage, producing engineers whose prototypes quite literally see the smoke and fire of real proving grounds.
