RD Music & Dance Studio is a contemporary training center tucked above the tree-lined streets of the North-End Arts District, occupying the entire second floor of a former textile warehouse that was retro-fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows and floating bamboo floors in 2019. Heavy glass doors on the mezzanine open onto a 3 200-square-foot open-concept space that merges a recording-grade music wing with a professional dance wing, all bathed in natural light until dusk, when color-programmable LED coves take over to create what regulars call the “golden-hour glow.”

The studio is divided into four acoustically isolated zones. In the East quadrant, Studio A contains a baby-grand Yamaha C3X, an analog Neve summing mixer, and a rack of UAD, Empirical Labs, and Lexicon outboard gear that streams, via Dante, to any of the other rooms. Musicians can book Reaper, Logic, or Pro Tools rigs loaded with Native Instruments Komplete and Spitfire orchestral libraries; amp modeling is handled by Kemper and Helix racks that mic up silently inside glass-walled booths lined with hemp insulation. Weekly “Open Decks” nights let producers road-test their tracks on Funktion-One monitors under proper club-like SPL, but without ever disturbing the neighbors, thanks to floating sub-floors and a 15-inch poured-concrete ceiling.

The West quarter is the dance wing. Studio B1 holds a full Harlequin Liberty sprung floor topped with Rosco Adagio vinyl that feels like suede under tap shoes, yet resilient enough for street-style heels. One entire mirrored wall retracts back to reveal Studio B2’s multimedia area, tricked out with ultra-short-throw 4K projectors and VJ software. Students in modern-jazz conditioning classes here actually dance through animated 3-D light patterns that are generated in real time from the music track being mixed next door— a unique “cross-stream” feature that the owners, Roland and Desiree Martínez, built from open-source motion-tracking code nearly 30 years ago for touring shows in Barcelona.

RD offers tiered memberships. Casual users book hourly micro-sessions that include a resident sound engineer or dance captains who will record clean stems or clean choreography simultaneously. Full members get 24/7 RFID access, monthly mix-mentorship from Grammy-nominated local producer Kam Reed (whose gold record for Lizzo hangs above the espresso machine), and invitation to “RD Labs” — quarterly interdisciplinary showcases where original dance scores premiere to a ticketed audience seated café-style among the rigging grid. The lobby boutique sells small-batch pedals, vegan touring shoes, and limited-run zines from the resident artists; proceeds stack up in a transparent tip jar labeled “Get Next Artist to SXSW.”
