Punjab Global Institute (PGI) of Medical Education and Research is a multi-specialty academic hospital and public-sector tertiary-care center located on a 277-acre urban campus in Chandigarh, India. Established in 1962 as an autonomous body under an Act of Parliament, the institute now functions under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and offers every discipline from routine family medicine to super-specialty organ transplantation. Its vision is “service to all socio-economic strata without discrimination,” and its daily outpatient load exceeds 12,000 patients, making it one of the busiest hospitals in Asia.
The physical plant groups 2,478 functional beds into 42 inpatient departments, 83 modular operating theatres, 25 ICU variants (MICU, SICU, NICU-step-down, CVICU, burns ICU, transplant ICU), and day-care oncology and dialysis units with 120 stations each. Separate 500-bed trauma and 200-bed mother–child blocks opened in 2023 follow green-hospital norms and have in-house pneumatic tube vacuum transport and 100 % medical air. Imaging suites house three 3-Tesla and two 1.5-Tesla MRIs, two robotic-arm CTs, four cardiac cath labs—one hybrid capable of trans-catheter aortic valve replacement—and the region’s only PET-MR cyclotron for precision oncology. A fully robotic Robotic Surgery Centre offers Da Vinci XI and Mazor spine navigation, while intra-op MRI allows real-time brain tumor excision. Laboratory medicine is CAP and NABL-accredited and runs 24×7 automated panels, next-gen genomic sequencing, and a transplant immunology hub.
More than 375 full-time faculty hold DM/MCh and PhD credentials, and over 350 residents and 400 nursing officers provide care guided by evidence-based protocols. Key centers of excellence include the Advanced Cardiac Centre, Bone Marrow Transplant & Stem Cell Therapy Centre, Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences—north India’s largest cadaveric liver centre doing 220 transplants annually—Advanced Paediatrics Centre with 150 NICU cots, and 72-bedded dialysis block for acute kidney injury. Emergency services include level-1 adult and pediatric 60-bed trauma EDs, rooftop heli-ambulance service, and two MICUs that are the core referral hub for four states.
Research spans 250 ongoing ICMR, DBT, and Gates-funded trials; 1,100 PubMed-indexed papers yearly; and India’s first indigenous rotavirus vaccine Ph-III trial. The PGI Translational Health Science & Technology Institute incubates biomedical start-ups in its 48,000-ft² technology park. Education offers 180 MBBS seats (via NEET-UG), 11 DM/MCh, and 14 specialty MD/MS programs; the Central Library subscribes to 3,300 journals and offers Cochrane campus access and simulation labs housing AI-enabled manikins.
Patient assistance includes cashless CGHS, Ayushman Bharat, and state insurance schemes plus a charitable Poor Patients’ Welfare Fund that covers drugs, implants, diet, and transport. Tele-ICU connecting 15 district hospitals allows e-consultation, while rural health camps and the satellite Geriatric Mobile Clinic reach 140 villages annually. Hospital infection rate is kept below 0.78 per 1000 patient-days through antibiotic stewardship and chlorhexidine bathing. With its seamless blend of cutting-edge care, academic rigour, and social responsibility, PGI Hospital continues to serve as the “Medical capital of North India” and a WHO-designated centre for infection-control training.
