Noida: 4-Year Surge in Reports of Unlicensed & Fake-Label Goods
Over the past four years, India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) office in Noida has registered 40 – 50 complaints against sellers who:
- offer electronics, water and helmets without the ISI mark
- sell phone chargers, microphones and power banks without the mandatory CRS mark
- export goods abroad without licences
- market toys with forged certification
Officials say the problem is growing because responsible agencies have yet to act.
Districts with the most complaints (2019-2023)
- Noida – 15 cases
- Aligarh – 5 cases
- Mathura – 3 cases
- Gwalior – 3 cases
Major violators operate in Noida, Aligarh, Gwalior and the Mathura industrial belts; consumers unwittingly buy sub-standard or fake products, lacking the necessary information.
Typical items reported per city
- Noida: Unlicensed foreign imports, electronics gadgets, microphones, power banks, gimbals, ABS brake parts, electric cables and helmets.
- Aligarh: Door handles, locks, helmets.
- Gwalior: Bottled water without a valid licence or after testing samples expired.
- Mathura: Contaminated water and foreign toys sold without the ISI mark.
Consumer protection measures
The Bureau has opened Standard Clubs in 400 local schools. Through a programme called “Learning Science by Standards”, students are shown how genuine products are manufactured so they can spot fakes.
Official comment
Vikrant Saraswat, Head, BIS Noida Branch:
“The majority of complaints relate to poor product quality. Taking these reports seriously, we not only investigate but also raise awareness in schools and colleges through our Standard Clubs.”
